Choosing the right upholstery fabric can be a very lengthy process! Not only will you need to select colours and patterns, you will also need to find a fabric with the qualities you need; for example, durability and stain resistance. You will also need to pay attention to the Martindale test, which is a rub test manufacturers administer to determine the resistance of a fabric. Therefore the higher the number of rubs the more durable the fabric will be against wear and tear.

Below are a selection of upholstery fabrics from some of our favourite brands!

1. Designers Guild

Designers Guild Essentials – Recycled Yarn collection. A series of three complimentary fabrics, ‘Lisbon’, ‘Tejo’ and ‘Estrela’ make up this beautiful textured weave group.

With a rub test of 30,000 and made of at least 90% recycled cotton fabrics, this is a great way to create a unique and mid-century contemporary feel, whilst also being environmentally friendly!

2. Prestigious Textiles

Prestigious Textiles, Saxon Collection. Plain with a supple texture and available in over 30 colours, this polyester and cotton blend fabric offers countless ways to harmonise with individual tastes in home decor styling.

At an extremely reasonable £29 per metre, and with a rub test of 40,000 this is one of the best plain, yet timeless fabrics to use for domestic upholstery.

3. Romo

Romo, Benito fabric in a Kingfisher colourway from the Romo Floris collection. The colourful broken stripes of cut and uncut viscose velvet create a captivating combination of design, texture and colour which is perfect for upholstery.

With a rub test of 40,000 this durable fabric is perfect to use as an accent piece in any living room, dining room or home office. With such a variety of colour in one design, this velvet is great for picking out individual colours to pair accessories with.

4. Iliv

Iliv, Burghley collection. This faux leather fabric consists of a PVC coating with a polyester and cotton backing. With over 40 colours available, this fabric is a great way to create a leather style without using real leather!

With a rub test of 350,000 this faux leather is perfect for any heavily used areas, such as dining room and kitchen chairs and stools. With the addition of a stain resistant finish, this is the perfect feature for a stain-prone eating areas!

5. Harlequin

Harlequin, Momentum Velvets collection, this lustrous velvet is gloriously tactile and has a water-repellent finish. Available in 30 delicious colourways, this polyester fabric has intricate cross-colouring to create movement in the fabrics’ appearance, cleverly reflecting the light.
